IKIGAI Framework
Need

Diagnosis Result: Need

Serving others, but trapped in an unrewarding and unfulfilling role.

Explanation

Defined as "What the world NEEDS." While somewhat abstract, it specifically refers to the perspective of: "Does my work truly solve the problems or struggles of others?" or "Am I making a tangible contribution to others?"

Position of "Need"

Venn diagram

Example 1

Believing there would be endless demand, Tom took a job in system administration at a medical institution. The on-site staff constantly pressures him day after day to fix bugs and add features.

However, with little practical experience, Tom finds it difficult to handle these requests. Because the salary is low compared to other professions, he gradually grew to resent the job itself. Tom's job involves nothing more than being desperately needed by others, classifying it as a pure "Need" state.

Example 2

Paul was semi-forced into taking on the neighborhood association's garbage area cleaning and monitoring duty, a role no one else wanted. It is an absolutely necessary role to maintain local hygiene and order, such as dealing with residents who break the rules.

However, Paul is bad at handling interpersonal conflicts and maneuvers poorly, and he deeply hates the early morning patrols. As it is a purely rotational volunteer position, there is no compensation. Paul's role comes with nothing but being desperately needed by others, placing him in a pure "Need" state.

Advice for those in the "Need" state

"Need" is defined as a reluctant state where you fulfill a role demanded by others but receive no reward and feel no sense of fulfillment.

To move closer to "Ikigai," you need to supplement the currently missing elements: "Great At," "Love," and "Paid For." Currently, you possess the kindness and sense of responsibility to answer others' needs, but you are sacrificing your own feelings and growth. First, try breaking down the required role to see if there is any process you might become "Great At" at, or any moment you might "Love".

If you cannot find anything at all, you may need to make the decision to distance yourself from or decline that role. Also, if you are taking this on without compensation, you should negotiate for fair "Paid For" remuneration or move to a different environment that provides it.

The shortcut to Ikigai is not to sell your precious time and effort short, but to find a new place of "Need" where you can joyfully contribute and receive appropriate returns.
